I'm also experiencing horrendous backup speeds via the QNAP IDrive backup application. It is averaging approx 460MB an hour and has been running over 48 hours and is consistently slow. I cannot confirm how long this has been going on for as I have only recently put a large amount of data to be included in the backup profile and have noticed how long it is taking,

As other members have mentioned, I have ran the same backup profile but using Google Drive and was getting 4.5GB an hour. I'm based in the UK and appreciate I would not get the same sort of speeds but not as slow as this. My connection has an upstream of 12Mb and it is currently connected to via HTTPS to 66.51.30.102, average echo response is 182ms. My ISP does not traffic shape based on the package I am on and the backup has been running overnight when I would expect my ISP's local infrastructure to be under utilised, so that factor can be ignored also.

There is nothing wrong with the upstream connection as Google Drive is utilising it correctly, there are no issues with the QNAP or the drives within it as I ran the Google Drive test via Cloud Drive Sync which is a QNAP application similar to the IDrive.

For your reference, the model is QNAP 419P+

I'm done with this crap, too. Installed the "new version" and still running 2 days later to back up 13gb. Even took my laptop to work and connected to our gigabit connection and still only seeing 400-500K upload speeds (same as at home). I suppose if the incremental function really worked then it would be OK but when it wants to do a full backup every single time this really isn't acceptable.

Idrive - don't bother with your "send us the ticket number" response...too little, too late. I've been down the path and ZERO response on my ticket weeks later.

Well I thought it was my VPN being throttled but now I see why it's been taking so long to backup/restore. Been trying to transfer some files into a new computer, around 60gb. Started the restore yesterday at 1pm, at 84% almost 24 hrs later. Just ran a speediest and running at 60mbps. Backup is taking even longer.

IDRIVE - please fix this. Obviously you have a problem when everyone is complaining and threatening to drop your service. I have a 5TB plan and am highly considering changing to another provider...

The same here. I just signed up for a 2 year 5 TB subscription.
I have a Synology NAS DS918+ with the latest IDrive package installed.
The upload speed is 100 kb/s.
A speedtest at speedtest.net using "California Internet Solutions, Los Angeles, CA" as testserver showed me that I have 63.04 MBit download and 10.78 MBit upload.

I found out that if you split your backup into several backup jobs and start them simultaneously you get 100 kb/s PER job. So this must be bandwidth throttling, because I cannot imagine anything else.

As long as IDrive does not get fixed this problem I can only advise to not subscribe if you have plenty of data to backup.

The only responses from support I can read since 2 year old posts are that the development team is working on improvements.
Since 2 years and no progression?

I'm really upset and if the next supportticket (#ID330227916 for reference) contains no solution I will cancel my account and demand a full refund.

I will post an update if the support had been able to solve my issue.

So I signed up for a new account a little over a week ago. Like many others have said, upload can be quite spotty. I generally throttle myself to 2-4mbps as to not choke my connection, but many times I have caught the computer sending NOTHING. Yesterday I ran unthrottled and found that its transfer rates when it does work are fine (pretty much maxed out my 10mbps upload) but the problem is there are to many times when the transfer is straight up idle. One thing to keep in mind is the PC doing the backup is a mini-pc that is doing NOTHING except running idrive and a PLEX server (mostly idle). There is nothing that should cause the idrive to consider holding back.

Today I tried to view the status of what I had uploaded already and I got nothing on the refreshes. I go to the web site and I get this, "Your files and folders are currently unavailable as account is under maintenance. Try again later." wtf is this? What good is a backup service if I don't have access to my backups when I need them?

I don't ask for much, I just need a place to store a large drive image offsite, nothing more nothing less. But at this rate, this service is NOT meeting even the bare minimum of services required.

^^^^^ THIS WORKED FOR ME.

In the folder you want to back up go to Properties->Security->Edit->Add. Type "system" in the text box and then click Check Names (system should then appear underlined). In the security tab, apply the default inputs which allow read/access/execute to SYSTEM.

I got here by searching for "There is no permission to backup the folder". Please consider adding this to a faq.

I have selected my C drive to create a disk image of and after selected I press the "Create Disk Image" button.... Nothing happens and I have left it there after pressing for quite some time to make sure it wasn't a long process to start.

Any ideas on how to get this working?

Never mind... I found that the OS drive cannot be backed up.

Yep, I agree that the iDrive upload speed is terrible. I have a relatively slow upload connection at home (~1.8 mb/s) and my QNAP backup has been running since Sept 8th for about 8 hours per night. It was about 70% done as of last week. I took the QNAP to my office since we are closed for Christmas week where we consistently see 22 mb/s upload speeds. After a week at the office, running 24/7, the backup job is 76% complete. There has been no difference in the effective upload speed after changing locations. I switched to Amazon Drive yesterday and started the same upload job. It is now 50% complete in just 24 hours. WOW! what a difference. iDrive does limit upload speeds and is terribly slow. I have the 5TB plan (former Crashplan user) and I doubt that I could ever use all of the space due to upload speed limitations. By the way, Amazon Drive does not include photos in the space calculation so I can store my entire photo collection > 1 TB using a 100 GB account. Heck, I know this might change, but I don't mind paying if it works. You do lose file versioning by switching from iDrive. I might use iDrive for small files and Amazon for photos and videos.

Hello. I have an enterprise account with about 112 users and our largest problem is uploading Outlook PST files on the daily backup. (We do not have continues backup enabled nor do we use the Sync option right now).

Sometimes they upload with no problem, but more often then not the PSt files fail because outlook is open.

Does anyone know of a good method to upload PST files?

IDrive on "Uploading PST Files"

IDrive application is capable of backing up open files for supported platforms including Windows 2003 and 2008 servers, Windows 7 and Windows 8 is enabled by default.

Thus, even if your Microsoft Outlook application is open, the IDrive application does a reliable backup of associated data. In case if the .pst files are locked, then the locked files will not be backed up.

You may schedule the backups when the outlook application in not in use and check if the reported issue is resolved.

I'm confused by this too but confused/concerned more about how backup REALLY works.

I did a initial backup of a fist level folder (pictures) and it took some time but worked and I verified the backup by looking at the restore menu even.

I now have been adding "new" sub folders each containing new unbanked up pictures.

After three days of daily scheduled backups, no files were backed up and I verified they were not in the restore.

IDrive support told me to set verify to 1day, whidh it won't let me set it below 2, they said the verify is wharpt check for new folders and files, not backup. That's not ver intuitive. Verify to me means check everything in the backup to the original. Typically I would do that maybe weekly.

This said, I had set verify to two days and magically, the new folders and new files are in the restore pane, but backup again reported no files backed up.

So this is telling me that verify is really what most of us expect as backup and new folder and new file monitoring is really "verify". Now the bad news I'd that new folders and new files are only added to the backup every two days, so we are "exposed" to failure for 48 hours.

I too am a CrashPlan widow. I've use Carbonite in the past and wasreasonable happy , but was frustrated by there bandwidth throttling. IDrive looked like a great plan with fantastic features (sync++++) and device management. But, backup just has to work and it must be brain dead reliable. New folders and new files should automatically backup and should take priority.

This nomenclature confusion and lack of clarity is not too comforting for a new user.

So iDrive. What's what.

I am (well was) a long time CrashPlan user; and I just wanted to add to this that this is a very significant feature. As mentioned, CrashPlan allowed you to move any data around without the overheads of having to re-upload this data, or do any manual changes on the server side. Please add this feature :)

Curious as well. The legacy iDrive product did not have this feature, and if I read this thread correctly, always verified the backup set prior to a backup. Honestly, I thought that it meant they were going to hash compare local against cloud to make sure they had a good copy (not to say the local copy isn't corrupted). But something along those lines. Not sure what they use as criteria, but for new files, that's just wrong if true. Still a great product with better features than most but that's just weird.

The verify backup set option will scan for changes in the backup set and update the backup set with the correct file count and permissions to the folders selected in the backup set.

When a schedule backup is performed, the application will scan for changes within folders and backup new or modified files. However, when there are permission changes on any files, these changes will not be updated and the application will only backup files where the files have appropriate permission.

However, in the case of verify backupset, the application will scan for changes to file count as well as permission of the files if any have changed. The application will be updated with the correct file count in the backup tab and file permission will be scanned for any changes.

This is important when you do not have permission to any folder to be backed up and upon providing permissions to the folder, you can use the verify backup set feature which will scan for changes and backup the files for which you have provided permissions.

Interesting thread as I have the same concern. I recently installed IDrive after being a Mozy client for a decade but their pricing is getting ridiculous. Mozy backed up flawlessly. After 10 days IDrive finally backed up nearly 500 GB (very slow). I noticed when I added more files it wasn't finding them. I had set the backup to run every morning at 1 am but the only time it backed up new files was running a verify manually. Verify in version 67029 could only be set a 2 day minimum. I opened a ticket for this ... after 3 days I contacted Idrive for an update and was told to update to 67030 version so I could set to 1 day. Why check for new version failed to detect this, is another issue.

I think if I understand the settings correctly... CDP setting at 15 min only applies to files already in the backup set. If I change the file it will be detected and backed up in 15 min intervals. Verify options only checks for new files to add to the backup set. And the backup schedule frequency is only applicable if you don't have CDP set.

For example I now have CDP set at 15 min, verify set to 1 day and backup schedule to 1 day. Really that is not necessary. The verify will backup new files and the CDP setting at 15 min will back up whenever there is a change in an existing file in the backup. The daily schedule is really redundant. Perhaps the moderator can confirm?
